In a stunning turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has successfully crossed the majority threshold in Haryana, achieving a historic third consecutive term in the 90-member Assembly, a feat never accomplished since the state’s formation in 1966. Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference-Congress alliance has emerged victorious, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.

The BJP secured 48 seats in Haryana, surpassing the majority mark of 46, while the Congress managed to win 37 seats. This outcome defies pre-election predictions, which had suggested a clean sweep for the Congress party. In stark contrast, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) failed to make significant gains, with INLD winning only two seats and JJP not securing any.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the electorate for making history, stating, “The people of Haryana not only made us win but gave us more seats and more vote share.” He emphasized the unprecedented nature of the BJP’s victory, highlighting the party’s increased support in the state.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference (NC) and Congress alliance claimed 48 seats, while the BJP won 29 seats, a drop from their previous standing. Farooq Abdullah has named his son, Omar Abdullah, as the next Chief Minister. Omar Abdullah expressed confidence in forming a government, stating, “It will not be ‘police raj’ here but ‘logon ka raj’.”

The election in Jammu and Kashmir marked the first in a decade, and the NC’s strong performance signals a significant political comeback, particularly in the Kashmir Valley, where the BJP faced challenges in translating its developmental promises into votes.

The results also highlighted the contrasting fortunes of political strategies in both regions. In Haryana, the BJP’s outreach to Other Backward Class (OBC) and Scheduled Caste (SC) communities, combined with the fresh leadership of Nayab Singh Saini, played a crucial role in overcoming anti-incumbency sentiment. The party’s successful campaign strategies contrasted sharply with the Congress’s missteps, including a narrow focus on the Jat community at the expense of broader voter bases.

However, the Congress party’s response to the results has been combative. Following the election, they lodged a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging delays in updating election trends. The Commission dismissed these claims, asserting they were unfounded.

As political dynamics shift in both Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, the implications for future governance and party strategies remain to be seen. The BJP’s victory in Haryana consolidates its position in northern India, while the NC-Congress alliance’s resurgence in Jammu and Kashmir could reshape the political narrative in the region for years to come.
