Diwali Celebration Cancelled Amid Canada-India Diplomatic Tensions

Event Cancellation and Lack of Explanation
The Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC) has expressed dismay following the cancellation of a Diwali celebration that was scheduled to be hosted by Conservative MP Todd Doherty on October 30. The organizers received no explanation for the sudden cancellation, leaving them perplexed and disappointed.

Strained India-Canada Relations
The cancellation comes at a time of heightened tensions between India and Canada, primarily due to allegations involving pro-Khalistan activities. Canadian authorities have accused Indian diplomats of being involved in gathering information and collaborating with criminal gangs targeting members of the pro-Khalistan movement. In response, India has expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its top envoy from Ottawa.

Calls for Apology
In a letter to Pierre Poilievre, Canada’s opposition leader, OFIC President Shiv Bhasker articulated the community’s feelings of betrayal. He highlighted that several political leaders who had previously attended the event withdrew their support this year, leaving the Indian-Canadian community feeling unjustly singled out. Bhasker has called for an apology, condemning the cancellation as an “insensitive and discriminatory act.”

Deepening Issues of Discrimination
Bhasker emphasized that this situation reflects a larger, systemic issue of racism and discrimination in Canada. He noted that while diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa are crucial, they should not lead to the unfair treatment of Canadians of Indian origin, who are not linked to the Indian government.

Past Celebrations
The Diwali celebration has been a significant event, with the previous year’s gathering attended by Poilievre and then-High Commissioner of India to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, attracting around 540 guests. This cancellation has raised concerns about the implications for community representation and inclusivity in Canada.
