In an exclusive conversation with carandbike, Rajeev Chauhan, head of BYD India, confirmed that the company’s fourth model will be a new SUV, following the introduction of the eMax 7 MPV. This upcoming SUV is set to be positioned in the premium segment, with pricing anticipated between ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh.

Expanding the Lineup

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is looking to strengthen its presence in India. Next month, the company will launch a facelifted version of its eMax 7 MPV, while continuing to see robust demand for its existing models, the Atto 3 SUV and Seal sedan. The new SUV is expected to make its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo, scheduled for January 17, 2025.

Chauhan stated, “An SUV is definitely on the horizon as the Indian market demands it. We are currently focused on ensuring the success of the eMax 7 MPV. By the time the Bharat Mobility Global Expo happens, we should be able to confirm the model.”

Commitment to Pure Electric

While BYD evaluates options for its SUV lineup, Chauhan emphasized the company’s commitment to maintaining a pure-electric approach, with hybrids not being a priority for the foreseeable future. The Atto 3 remains BYD’s sole SUV in India, priced from ₹24.99 lakh to ₹33.99 lakh.

Reports suggest that one potential candidate for the Indian market is the BYD Seal U, also known as the Song Plus EV in China. This model is significantly larger than the Atto 3, featuring larger battery options and a range exceeding 500 km (WLTP), making it a competitor to vehicles like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Hyundai Tucson.

Conclusion

As BYD continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup in India, the introduction of a new premium SUV marks a significant step forward for the brand. The company’s focus on electric models aligns with growing consumer demand for sustainable transportation options.
