Paraguay Imposes Controversial Jersey Ban Ahead of Qualifier
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, remains optimistic that Lionel Messi jerseys will still make an appearance in Paraguay’s Defensores del Chaco stadium during Thursday’s crucial World Cup 2026 qualifier, despite the Paraguayan Football Association’s (APF) ban on rival team shirts. The APF has issued a ruling that prohibits fans from wearing jerseys representing Argentina, Argentine clubs, or clubs with international players. The objective is to maintain a pro-Paraguay atmosphere in the stadium, according to APF manager Fernando Villasboa.
“We won’t allow the other team’s shirt. It’s not about Messi or any specific player. We respect the careers of all footballers. It’s just that the home ground is very important to us,” Villasboa stated in a press briefing.
Scaloni’s Confidence in Messi’s Global Appeal
Despite this restriction, Scaloni expressed confidence that Messi’s global stature would overpower the ban. The coach believes that fans in Paraguay, regardless of their allegiance, will continue to sport Messi’s iconic Argentina jersey. “Leo [Messi] is stronger than all that, and there will be Argentina shirts,” Scaloni remarked during a press conference.
The head coach further emphasized that Messi’s appeal transcends national boundaries and doesn’t equate to supporting Argentina over Paraguay. “It doesn’t mean they don’t support Paraguay. I think it’s good that football people recognize what he is. And it’s not because you have a shirt that you become an Argentina fan,” Scaloni added.

Paraguay Coach Responds to the Jersey Controversy
Paraguay’s coach, Gustavo Alfaro, distanced himself from the jersey ban, saying he was unaware of the restriction. Alfaro suggested that the APF’s decision was simply to minimize potential conflicts during the match and ensure a harmonious environment in the stadium. “I had no idea about that. The idea, I think, is just to reduce any potential sources of conflict,” he stated. However, Alfaro humorously added, “I hope Messi has the best game of his life against Peru—but not tomorrow.”
Despite this, Alfaro acknowledged Messi’s incredible legacy and reputation, showing his respect for the Argentine legend.
Scaloni Remains Confident in Argentina’s World Cup Qualification Journey
As the South American World Cup qualifiers continue, Argentina leads the standings with 22 points, three clear of Colombia. The team will face Paraguay on November 16, followed by a home match against Peru on November 19. Argentina’s dominance in the qualifiers reflects their intent to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup, with Messi’s contribution remaining a key factor in their success.
Scaloni’s unwavering confidence in Messi’s influence on and off the pitch remains evident, as the legendary forward’s popularity continues to reach fans worldwide, regardless of national borders. In Paraguay, Scaloni is certain that Messi’s presence will be felt, even if some fans are not permitted to wear the Argentina jersey.
