Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed that he had a “brief exchange” with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a summit in Laos, emphasizing the need to address the strained relations between the two nations. This tension escalated following Trudeau’s allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Focus on Safety and Rule of Law
Trudeau stated, “I emphasised that there is work that we need to do,” referring to the challenges in bilateral relations. He highlighted that ensuring the safety of Canadians and upholding the rule of law are fundamental responsibilities of his government.

Trade and People-to-People Ties
Despite the tensions, Trudeau expressed a desire to improve trade and people-to-people ties with India. “There are real issues that we need to solve and we’re going to stay focused on that,” he added, indicating a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.

Background on Nijjar’s Case
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was wanted by the Indian government, was killed in a targeted shooting in Surrey, Canada, in June 2023. Trudeau claimed there were “credible allegations” implicating Indian agents in the incident. India, on the other hand, dismissed these charges as “absurd” and “motivated.”

Escalating Allegations
In the wake of the allegations, four Indian nationals have been accused of murder and conspiracy related to Nijjar’s death. Furthermore, the US is reportedly investigating a plot linked to India involving another Khalistani figure, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

An unsealed US document from November 2023 alleged that officials in New Delhi offered $100,000 to a drug dealer to hire a hitman for Pannun in New York. India has stated it is conducting its own investigation into these claims.

Legal Proceedings
Last month, a US court issued summons to the Indian government and key officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and former R&AW chief Samant Goel, in connection with the Pannun case, further complicating diplomatic relations.

As both nations navigate these challenges, Trudeau’s comments indicate a recognition of the need for continued dialogue and resolution of ongoing issues.
